Lumenergiʼs Advanced Intelligent Lighting Solutions Chosen for Retrofit of Two California Federal Buildings

Newark, CA – February 2, 2010 – Lumenergi, a leading provider of energy-efficient, networked lighting systems today announced it was selected to provide the core technology in an energy efficiency retrofit of two California federal buildings. The retrofit performed by a major fixture manufacturer, was done as part of efforts by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) toward meeting their goals to increase energy savings, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve occupant productivity in government-owned workplaces.

The buildings are the Phillip Burton Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, at 450 Golden Gate Avenue in San Francisco (21-floors, 1.4Mft2), and the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, at 1301 Clay Street in Oakland, (18-floors, 1.1Mft2). The buildings will be outfitted with Lumenergiʼs advanced, energy-efficient lighting solution, utilizing the firmʼs new generation dimming ballasts and networked control systems.

GSA launched a pilot program to identify proven clean energy solutions that could eventually be incorporated into federal buildings nationwide. The specifications were designed to ensure energy-efficient, high performance, dynamically responsive, intelligent buildings. Lumenergi solutions met GSA specifications, which included:

  • Real-time monitoring and reporting
  • Fine-tuning lighting levels with smooth dimming
  • 2-way communication with individual addressability
  • Standards-based, open architecture with BMS (building management system) integration
  • Advance lighting control including integrated daylight harvesting, occupancy sensing, task tuning, scheduling and personal control
  • Automated load shedding for demand response

In 2009, Lumenergi was chosen to participate in GSAʼs pilot program on one floor of the Phillip Burton Federal Building in San Francisco, providing workstation-specific lighting solutions. Since installation, collected results demonstrate Lumenergiʼs systems significantly decreased lighting electricity usage to nearly 70 percent below the national average. Lumenergi continues to gather valuable data on energy and demand savings, occupant comfort, customer satisfaction and effective facility management.

“These projects demonstrate GSAʼs leadership in creating intelligent buildings. Lumenergi is honored to assist the federal government in saving taxpayers millions in energy and maintenance costs each year,” said Michael DʼAmour, CEO of Lumenergi. “Our intelligent lighting system provides a new level of user experience, while achieving climate-friendly energy savings. We look forward to helping more federal, state and commercial buildings achieve similar results.”

GSA manages more than 11 percent of the governmentʼs total procurement dollars and $30 billion in federal assets, including 8,600 government-owned or leased buildings and 213,000 vehicles. In California, the Federal building stock represents about 400 million square feet. Lighting is the biggest single use of electricity in office buildings, comprising approximately 34 percent of annual energy consumption. GSA is leading by example in smart energy management with the most advanced lighting solutions.
